SYMPOSIUM OVERVIEW:

The State of the Heart 2006 symposium is designed to provide a forum for the most recent advances in interventional, pharmacologic, and clinical management of patients with cardiovascular disease.

ACTIVITY OBJECTIVES:

After participating in this program, physicians should be able to:

"High-Density Lipoproteins: Epidemiology, Metabolism, and Pharmacologic Management"

  • Review worldwide epidemiologic studies supporting the conclusion that low HDL-cholesterol is an independent risk factor for CAD, while high levels are protective against atherosclerotic disease.
  • Review most recent studies of HDL metabolism and potential new targets for therapeutic intervention within the blood vessel wall, plasma, and liver.
  • Evaluate relative efficacy of treating low HDL-cholesterol with statins, fibrates, niacin, estrogen, and lifestyle modifications.

"Thoraco-abdominal Aortic Aneurysm...Endoluminal Repair"

  • Describe the prevalence, risk factors, and natural history of thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysms.
  • Recognize criteria for patients who are suitable candidates for endoluminal graft repair.
  • Be familiar with potential benefits and complications of endoluminal graft repair.

"Challenging Cases in the Management of Heart Rhythm Disorders"

  • Characterize the type of patient suitable for pulmonary vein isolation to cure atrial fibrillation.
  • Discuss the approved indications for the implantation of ICDs and Bi-Ventricular Pacing Devices.
  • Recognize ventricular dyssynchrony and current methods to treat it.

"Cardiac CT Angiography...The Future is Now"

  • Understand the application of Cardiac CTA relative to stress imaging and cardiac catheterization.
  • Explain the applications of Cardiac CTA in congenital heart disease and electrophysiology.
  • Recognize the limitations and identify appropriate candidates for Cardiac CTA.
ACTIVITY EVALUATION:

Program content, evaluation of presentation, screening for bias, and assessing future needs will be addressed by questionnaire.
